The amount of added sugar in breakfast cereal is shocking. Even the healthy options have sugar!
It might be surprising that a range of the more expensive “health”, “protein” or “bran” varieties have higher sugar contents, but if you think about the bland taste of bran, they would need to pump up the sugar and salt.
A serving is 30grams, which is less than what adults actually eat.
Adding Milk will increase the amount of sugar further (5 grams of sugar per 100g of milk)
Stay with the basics – oats.
If you are looking at the healthiest option, you cannot go wrong with oats cooked (or microwaved) with water.
Overnight no-cook oats with fat-free sugar-free yogurt is definitely a great tasting morning treat.
- 1/3 cup oats (the kind that cook in 5 minutes) plus a teaspoonful for topping
- 1/3 cup Low fat sugar-free yogurt (Greek yogurt if you want the fat content without the sugar)
- 1/3 cup milk (skimmed, low fat or full fat if you prefer)
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (or 1/4 teaspoon almond extract)
- 2 teaspoons of powered sugar replacement (or ommit if y ou want to reduce sugar altogether, it is still tastes great without sugar!)
- 1/2 cup fruit, frozen or fresh if you prefer added fruit, instead of using yogurt with fruit.
Add oats, yogurt, milk, vanilla or almond extract, and sugar substitute together and mix completely in a breakfast bowl. Stir in the fruit and mix to distribute evenly. Sprinkle the extra teaspoon of oats over the top and do not stir.
Put this in the fridge overnight and enjoy in the morning. You can make these breakfasts 3 days in advance and prep your meals 3 days ahead.
You can use blueberries, chopped banana, Strawberries, mango, raspberries, and peaches. Dice the larger fruits.
